Birmingham sits on the border between Plant Hardiness Zones 7b and 8a, indicating an average annual extreme minimum temperature range from 5° to 15° F.
The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree F zones.
Plants with a USDA Plant Hardiness Zone higher than 8a will likely not tolerate our winters and should be kept indoors or otherwise protected during cold weather.
